As a Registered Dietitian, Canadian Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified Insulin Pump Trainer, and fellow traveller on a T1D journey, I want YOU to feel empowered.

I’m on a mission to provide a fresh, practical approach to type 1 diabetes education, rooted in evidence-based solutions and grounded by real-life experiences.

I aim to empower people on their unique Type 1 Diabetes journeys, equipping them with the skills and tools to navigate challenges and live life to the fullest, with confidence and a clear path forward.

I’ve been in this space for a long time - both living with T1D since I was 9 years old, and choosing this as my career focus. That’s how I know that this space is both fast and slow moving, and that every person’s experience is vastly different.

Learn More About My Personal T1D Journey

Hi there!

I’m Alanna Chambers.

You might recognize me from features at:

Canada Deep Dive Series

I work with Canadians in the T1D community who are eager to build on their knowledge base and looking for a refreshed approach to managing their diabetes.

In a space where there are so many questions and unique experiences, here’s what I can promise you:

My Values

Evidence-Based Decisions

I stay informed by the latest research, technology innovations, and new insights. In my 1:1 work, I ask questions that challenge the status quo and require you to further explore your unique patterns. This is how we will help you achieve your goals!

Personalized Adaptability

I recognize and respect everyone’s unique journey and needs – personal choices are critical. I will encourage you and inspire self-discovery.

Welcoming to All

I embrace diverse approaches, treatments, and stages of the journey. I understand that your journey is about so much more than just the numbers.

Empowering &
Self Compassionate

I foster empowerment by collaborating to find effective strategies. I get it that T1D is not easy for any of us, so I prioritize an emphasis on self-compassion and hope.

Uplifting & Creative

I bring creativity and innovation to what I do, and I strive to find a way to have some fun & laughs along the way.

Professional Experience

Every step of my unique professional journey has taught me to embrace new perspectives.

After completing my Dietitian training at McGill University in 2006, I returned to British Columbia to begin my clinical work. Soon after, I relocated to Nova Scotia and followed my passion for diabetes and technology by joining Animas Canada, an insulin pump company.

Over the next 9 years, I worked alongside a T1D-centric team, supporting families during their transition to pump therapy, training healthcare professionals, and expanding my diabetes knowledge. Along the way, I earned my certification as a Canadian Certified Diabetes Educator.

Early Career

After the rewarding (and challenging!) journey to motherhood with 3 daughters, I branched into independent work. I expanded my skill-set by completing insulin pump training certifications for Medtronic, Omnipod, and Tandem. I embraced CGM technology and began leading workshops for healthcare professionals to share best practices.

To this day, I am grateful for my early exposure to “closed-loop” pump therapy thanks to the amazing work and support from the DIY “Looping” community. When hybrid-closed loop technology was introduced in Canada in 2019, I was ready to dive in and start training.

Taking on the Tech!

In 2023, I was honored to collaborate with Canadian experts to publish Diabetes Canada’s “Do-It-Yourself Automated Insulin Delivery: A Position Statement” and led the development of the accompanying “Healthcare Practitioner’s User Guide.” Most recently, I contributed to the new 2025 chapter in the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines: “Glycemic Management of Type 1 Diabetes Across the Lifespan.”

As a speaker and program creator, I enjoy sharing practical tips and strategies, whether at large national conferences, webinars, or small-group workshops. I vow to never stop learning, always stay curious, and keep paying it forward.

Opportunities with Big Impacts

I am deeply grateful to my mentors, colleagues, and the T1D community for continuing to share countless lessons about the ever-evolving world of T1D and the importance of supporting one another along the way.

Gratitude

At 9 years old I noticed symptoms and asked to do a blood sugar check on my sister’s meter. The rest is history…

How my journey began

2 injections per day, 3-4 finger pokes, and a strict meal plan. YIKES!

My early management

Denying a bad low during a basketball game and scoring in my own team’s hoop!

Most embarrassing diabetes moment

“An A1C of 7% is actually very difficult to achieve” – Dr. Andrew Farquar, first fellow-T1D healthcare provider I saw, ~1999

Best diabetes advice I ever received

During my 1st year University when I needed more flexibility (it was a “dumb pump” that did NO math!)

When & why I choose a pump

My years working for Animas Canada – from fellow-T1D colleagues, diabetes clinics across Canada, families on their journey to pump therapy, and volunteer time at camp & Children with Diabetes conferences!

When I learned the most

“The sun’ll come out tomorrow.” Some days with T1D just don’t go the way we hope. We must give ourselves some grace, let it go, and take on a fresh start tomorrow.

My favourite motto

Conquering 3 pregnancies with T1D- each with their own unique twists & turns. It makes me so grateful for my daughters. 💛

Greatest achievement to date with T1D

Starting Automated Insulin Delivery (“Looping”) in 2018. It changed my life. Period.

One Final Reflection

I understand that type 1 diabetes impacts each of us differently. My diabetes experience likely differs from yours. BUT we can all relate to many shared frustrations, triumphs, feelings, and hardships. And… we can do this! That’s why exploring each unique journey is what fuels me to keep working in this field.
